Gospel of John Discussion

Gospel of John Discussion

Q I know it is now difficult to see the gospels as distinct. I experience the same phenomenon, perhaps even more so since I teach this class every year. Nonetheless, I ask that you tackle this final gospel based discussion by addressing at least one of the following prompts: How do the nature of Jesus’ teaching differ between the Synoptic Jesus and the Johannine Jesus? Prove that John's Gospel emphasizes Jesus' divinity. Why do you suppose the eschatological urgency of Mark has diminished by the time of John's Gospel? Make a claim about some aspect of the Gospel of John and support that claim. Creative Prompt: Choose a gospel we’ve read thus far. Imagine you are a Jewish Christian (among the first following the Jesus movement). You attend a gathering of Christians and your congregation (not church yet) has access to the gospel you’ve chosen and only that gospel. No letters of Paul yet. Use scriptural evidence to support your answers. Based on the gospel, identify (list) how you would understand Jesus and the new religious movement. What parts of Judaism would be kept? How would the new movement be different from Judaism? What general tenants of faith would your Christianity embrace? What rituals/practices do you suppose your congregation should follow (explain)?

2. The Gospel describes god as "Father" over a hundred times and uses the phrase "the son (of God)" on twenty-nine occasions. This in itself exemplifies John's goal of assisting people in accepting Jesus Christ as the Son of God. The emphasis about this in the Gospel of John distinguishes it from the other gospel Accounts. The Gospel of John not only captures Christ's worldly mission, but it also aspires to portray Him as the prophetic son of God, highlighting his divinity while pointing forward to His ultimate rule as God and King.
